Archaeological testing of the proposed development site at Townparks, Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, entailed the excavation of seven linear test trenches totalling 275 linear metres within a 0.93 hectare area. The upcast topsoil from all the excavated trenches was scanned by a discriminating detection device (21R0131) and no potential archaeological artefacts were uncovered. In total, 5 late 19th-/early 20th-century features were identified in three of the excavated test trenches (Trenches 4, 5, and 6). These features consisted of four walls/wall lines and one built garden feature. Manual cleaning revealed late 19th-/early 20th-century cultural material within the upper surfaces of these features, including clay pipe stems, pottery shreds and brick inputs. Demolition layers were associated with the walls in T5 and T6. As the origin and function of all the identified features remains to be categorically determined, it is not possible to discount some of these features as not being of archaeological interest.
A building survey of the upstanding structures revealed no evidence of any building fabric which predates the early decades of the nineteenth century.
