Archaeological testing was undertaken at a development site in the grounds of Scoil Asicus Naofa, Carrowbunnaun, Strandhill, Co. Sligo on April 8, 2021, in response to a condition of planning. The school is located within a reclaimed dune system, approximately 0.7km from the coast.
The development lies within the Zone of Notification of a recorded monument, classified as an earthwork (SMR SL013-033----). Part of the western section of the earthwork has been incorporated into a field boundary, which marks the boundary of the development site. The development was designed to avoid any impact on the monument and respect a 20m buffer zone around it.
Six trenches were excavated across the areas where works are proposed. A number of modern plough furrows were identified. A deposit of midden material, comprising quantities of seashell mixed with charcoal, was noted in one of the furrows.
Recommendations included archaeological monitoring of all groundworks, based on the results of testing.
