Excavation cuttings consisted of exploratory trenches opened to facilitate directional drilling or to find existing services beneath the road and public footpath. In total, five trenches were opened during archaeological monitoring. Works took place during the day in dry weather.
Trench 1 was excavated on to locate an existing water pipe. It was the most southerly trench, was orientated east to west and measured 1.5m long, 0.5m wide and 0.62m deep. The stratigraphic sequence comprised a 0.12m deep layer of concrete (public footpath) sealing a 0.2m deep layer of loosely compacted grey gravel (hardcore), overlying a mid-brown moderately compacted sandy/silty clay 0.18m in depth which overlay a 0.12m deep mottled brown compact silty clay. No potential archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted in this trench.
Trench 2 was excavated to locate an existing water pipe. It was located approximately 15m north of Trench 1, was orientated east to west and measured 1.5m long, 0.8m wide and 0.65m deep. The stratigraphic sequence comprised a 0.1m deep layer of concrete (public footpath) sealing a 0.16m deep layer of loosely compacted silty sand with moderate stone inclusions, overlying a compact grey clay with occasional sand inclusions 0.24m deep, which overlay a 0.1m deep mottled yellow brown compact clay with occasional stone and sand inclusions. No potential archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted in this trench.
Trench 3 was excavated to locate an existing water pipe. It was located approximately 30m west of Trench 2, was orientated north to south and measured 2.6m long, 0.7–0.95m wide and 0.6m deep. The stratigraphic sequence comprised a 0.1m layer of concrete (public footpath) sealing a 0.15m deep layer of loose grey gravel, overlying a 0.1m deep mottled brown compact clayey silt, overlying a 0.15m deep compact yellow clay which overlay a 0.1m deep grey clay. No potential archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted in this trench.
Trench 4 was excavated to access the ground for directional drilling. It was located in the eastern corner of a private garden approximately 20m northeast of Trench 2. The trench was oriented north to south and measured 0.8m long, 0.4–0.9m wide and 0.64m deep. The stratigraphic sequence comprised 0.35m of a loosely compacted topsoil/sod layer sealing a 0.15m deep layer of moderately compacted light brown silty clay with occasional inclusions of charcoal and small stones, overlying a 0.14m deep layer of mottled yellow brown compact clay with occasional stones. No potential archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted in this trench.
Trench 5 was excavated to assess the ground for directional drilling. It was located approximately 8m west of Trench 4 in the same private garden, was orientated east to west and measured 1.14m long, 0.7m wide and 0.65m deep. The stratigraphic sequence of the trench comprised 0.3m of loosely compacted topsoil/sod layer sealing a 0.15m deep mottled compact brown silty clay with occasional inclusions of charcoal and small stones, overlying a 0.2m deep layer of mottled yellow-brown compact clay with occasional stones. No potential archaeological finds, features or deposits were noted in this trench.
