A programme of archaeological monitoring was carried out at the Nazareth House, Magheraboy, Co. Sligo. The proposed works entailed the construction of new carparking facilities, demolition of defunct buildings and development of new paths, in the grounds of the former Nazareth House orphanage and nursing home.
The proposed development was located to the west of the historic town of Sligo. There are no recorded monuments within the direct vicinity of the proposed development site. The Nazareth House is listed on the Record of Protected Structures as No. 24 SE. The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage requested that a suitably qualified archaeologist be engaged to conduct archaeological monitoring of all ground disturbances resulting from the enhancement works.
The onsite works involved monitoring of all topsoil removal works including drainage and all associated ground works associated with the development of the new carparking facilities.
Monitoring took place on 21 and 22 July 2021 and 16 September 2021. The work was carried out by a mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision.
No deposits, artefacts or features of archaeological significance were noted during monitoring of the groundworks.
