Archaeological testing was required by the local planning authority prior to construction of 1 house, garage, packaged treatment unit and raised soil polishing filter, together with all ancillary works and services at Ardcarne, Boyle, Co Roscommon. Given the proximity of the proposed site to an area of archaeological potential - recorded monuments RO 006 – 103017 and RO 006 – 103016 (Ringfort and Cashel), the site was subject to pre – development testing. The proposed building was within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the monuments.
The test trenches were excavated as per the licence application and method statement. Topsoil varied from 0.35–0.5m deep in the dry greenfield area where the natural subsoil was very rocky. No artefacts or environmental evidence were revealed during the test trenching exercise.
