Archaeological monitoring was carried out for the Tibohine Water Mains Scheme (WMS) in County Roscommon between June and September 2021. The monitoring was undertaken by Lydia Cagney and Patrick Walsh.
The Tibohine WMS was located along the existing road network (L1244) to the south-east of Ballaghaderreen. Works for the scheme involved the laying of 4,668m of new/replacement water mains within the existing carriageway. The scheme was part of an Irish Water nationwide programme to upgrade the existing water network. Works were being carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Irish Water.
A preliminary archaeological screening assessment carried out by AMS in March 2021 (Smith 2021) highlighted the direct impacts on the Zone of Notification of one RMP site (RO014-019: Ringfort – rath), a surrounding area of archaeological potential (AAP-4) and a further three areas of archaeological potential (AAP-1 to AAP-3). These impacts could not be avoided and therefore archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance works within these areas was recommended.
In line with these recommendations, archaeological monitoring of all ground disturbance works (open cut trenching/trial pits etc.) within these areas was carried out. No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the course of monitoring.
