Archaeological testing was carried out on a proposed development site at Lackagh More, Co. Offaly on 6 December 2021. The development site is located within the area of archaeological constraint for OF006-032001 (Castle) and OF006-032003 (Bawn). Previous reports prepared in respect of the proposed development comprised an archaeological impact assessment (Dominic Delany & Associates, December 2020) and a geophysical survey (Earthsound Geophysics, May 2021). The geophysical survey did not identify any archaeological features within the development site but a number of features of potential archaeological interest were identified and archaeological testing was recommended.
Testing comprised the excavation of nine test trenches, designed to test all elements of the proposed development as well as targeting the principal anomalies detected in the geophysical survey. The trenches were 6-45m long and 1.25m wide. Testing revealed 0.2-0.4m of topsoil over compact yellow/brown clay subsoil, with pockets of the underlying grey sand and gravel occasionally exposed. No archaeology was found.
