On behalf of Offaly County Council, monitoring was undertaken at Blundell Castle, Co. Offaly from 31 May to 2 June 2021 in two main areas, namely in the internal area of the castle and adjacent the southern external castle wall face.
The archaeological works entailed a general clean-up of the site, and reduction of the ground surface where piles of rubble and/or modern refuse had accumulated. The intention of the monitoring was not to break the original ground surface, but instead to leave a clean/level surface at the castle, devoid of modern rubbish and overgrowth.
No features of archaeological significance were uncovered during monitoring.
