An archaeological impact assessment was carried out following a request to construct a cattle underpass beneath a tertiary road to the south of a farmyard in Garrymona, Walshisland. The site of a castle/tower-house (OF026-21) is located 30m to the north-west of the underpass. Two test trenches were excavated across the development area as part of the impact assessment.
It was clear prior to commencement of testing that the ground on the north side of the road has been subject to considerable ground disturbance over the years. Trenching here exposed pockets of solid bedrock and an area that had been used for dumping rubble and other modern farmyard debris. On the south side of the road, testing revealed a thin cover of topsoil overlying solid bedrock and nothing of archaeological significance was exposed.
