Unlicensed archaeological monitoring was carried out at Rahard, Carnaross, Kells, Co. Meath. The fieldwork took place on 19 October using a 13-tonne tracked excavator. The site was located in greenfield c. 289m north of an embanked enclosure ME009-023. The extent of a driveway and site for a house and ancillary
buildings were marked out and the topsoil was stripped down to natural under strict supervision. The driveway measured 4m to 10m in width and 0.1m to 0.3m in depth. The topsoil, which consisted of a rich dark brown clayey silt, overlay a light brown clayey sand that turned to a brownish-orange gravel as it moved eastwards. At the site of the buildings an area c. 38m by c. 29m by 0. 26m–0.44m in depth was stripped. A number of post-medieval furrows and a post-medieval field drain were identified. No features of archaeological significance were identified and no finds were recovered. The work is now complete and no further mitigation is necessary.
