Archaeological testing was carried out over the course of two days from 20 May 2021 using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. The trenches targeted potential archaeological features that were identified during a preceding geophysical survey carried out in 2017 (Leigh, Licence 17R0193), as well as open green space to fully investigate the archaeological potential of the site.
Testing revealed three areas of archaeological significance, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas 1-3. These comprise a cluster of ditches including part of a possible rectilinear enclosure with associated features in the north-west quadrant of the site (AA1); a cluster of pits with ditches possibly relating to a field system at the north-east corner of site (AA2); and a kiln located in the southeast of the site (AA3).
