Test excavation in advance of a proposed school development was undertaken in dry bright conditions. Five machine-assisted test trenches (300 linear metres, 630 sq.m) were excavated across the site under archaeological supervision. Predominantly in rough pasture, the generally level site has a deep ditch and a surrounding thick stand of trees situated in the eastern part of the site bordering the Rooske Road. This wooded area and a portion of the application area within the grounds of the Gaelscoil to the north were not suitable for test trenching.
Test trenches were placed at regular intervals across the site. Topsoil was shallow and generally measured 0.15-0.2m deep. It overlay deposits of ‘made ground’ subsoil comprising in the main of mixed deposits of crushed stone/hardcore, boulders, building rubble and introduced clays. This material was highly compacted and presumably rolled and compacted at regular intervals during deposition. Excavation of test trenches ceased at 1.2m. No archaeological features or objects were recorded in any of the excavated trenches.
