Monitoring took place in July-Sept 2021 of works at Carrickleck Forest, Creggs Road, Carrickleck, Nobber, Co. Meath.
Excavation works commenced on the 22 July 2021 at the entrance way. The hedge was removed, a new ditch was excavated and a drainage pipe laid. The area was then levelled out in preparation for the road construction. Works were stalled once this section was complete and did not recommence until 16 Sept 2021 when the road construction continued northwards from the existing farm road to a T at the end of the new forest road. The trees were removed by a forwarder and stacked on both sides of a 20m wide path; tree stumps were manually removed by chainsaw and the brash was laid along the line of the road. A JCB then spread hard-core material on top of the brash to create the forest road – no soil was excavated along the length of the road.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during this section of the works.
