A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out at Cormeen, Moynalty, Kells, Co. Meath.
The site had the potential to contain unrecorded, sub-surface remains of archaeological nature due to its location in proximity to Ringfort – rath ME005-023 that is located in the field adjacent to and south of the site. The southern part of the site is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential associated with this monument. Furthermore, the site’s south boundary is also a townland boundary between Cormeen and Tirachorka townlands.
The fieldwork took place in May 2021 using a 14-tonne tracked excavator. A total of five test trenches were excavated across relevant areas. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total, 86m of linear trenches were excavated. The test trenches were excavated down to the natural subsoil, consisting of a light orangey-brown sandy silt with shale and large stone outcrops with a depth of 0.4–0.6m.
No archaeological features or deposits were identified, and no finds were recovered. No further archaeological work is recommended.
