Archaeologiocal testing was undertaken at a roughly rectangular-shaped garden plot located at the rear of properties facing onto Carrick Street and accessed via Pitcher Lane in Kells, County Meath. The archaeological record indicates the site was located within the zone of notification surrounding Kells Historic Town (ME017-044---) and in the general vicinity of the possible route of the former town wall between Carrick Gate and Maudlin Gate.
A total of three trenches were excavated throughout the site. Trenches A and B measured 35m x 2m while Trench C was 40m x 2m. The stratigraphy encountered indicated that the land sloped naturally to north-east. Fill and rubble material encountered in Trench A highlighted previous disturbance in the west of the site. No archaeological material was recorded from the site with no evidence for any town wall at this location.
