Archaeological Testing was required by the local planning authority prior to construction of 1 house, garage, effluent system, together with all ancillary works and services at Knockadoon, Irishtown, Co Mayo. Given the proximity of the proposed site to an area of archaeological potential around recorded monument MA 112 057, licensed pre – development testing was required. The proposed development is within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the monument.
The test trenches were excavated as per the licence application and method statement. There was a relatively thin layer of topsoil, generally 0.3m in depth, overlying a stony compacted mid-brown to orange subsoil. There were seams of stones exposed, particularly in Trench 5. No artefacts or environmental evidence were revealed during the test trenching exercise. Nothing of archaeological significance will be impacted upon by the proposed developments.
