A programme of archaeological testing was carried out at Toocananagh, Bohola, Co. Mayo on behalf of Bohola Community Park Co. Limited. The proposed works entail the construction of a biodiversity park, training pitch, full pitch and all associated works including access, parking, changing rooms and viewing stand.
The proposed development is 14 acres in size, and as such the planning authority recommended pre-development archaeological test trenching.
Testing took place from 2-6 of September 2021. Twenty-two linear test trenches were mechanically excavated at 15m intervals across the entire proposed development site, which comprised two large grass-covered fields. The total area excavated comprised 2710.1m of trenches. No deposits, features or objects of archaeological significance were noted during testing.
