The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Branraduff townland, east of Ballindine, County Mayo, was carried out on 1 April 2021. The proposed development consisted of the construction of private dwelling house and domestic garage. Testing was carried out in response to a Request for Further Information by the local authority and was necessary due to the location of a church (MA112-034) with an associated graveyard (MA112-034001) and souterrain (MA112-034002) a short distance to the north of the proposed development site.
The proposed development site was located in a large field of undulating pasture. The testing consisted of the excavation, by machine, of five trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development, especially that closest to MA112-034. The trenches measured 26.6m, 35.3m, 21.9m, 15.8m and 39.9m long respectively; 1.9-2m wide and 0.3-0.75m deep.
The pre-development testing revealed evidence of the reclamation of the field in the second half of the 20th century, the remains of a bonfire, a small circular feature of unknown date but nothing of known archaeological significance.
