The test excavation of a site in advance of its development at Carrowreaghmony townland, in Ballyglass village, County Mayo, was carried out on 24 February 2021. The project consisted of the demolition of a number of buildings on the site and the construction of two dwelling houses. The testing was carried out in response to a Request for Further Information from Mayo County Council and was necessary due to the location of an enclosure (MA100-019) in the field immediately south of the site.
The proposed development was located within a field of pasture which contained a number of disused buildings along its east side. There was no visible surface evidence of the monument extending into the development site.
The testing consisted of the excavation of three trenches, located to best cover the area of the proposed development, especially that closest to the enclosure, by machine. The trenches measured 14.9m, 50.8m and 50m long respectively; 1.8-2.1m wide and 0.35-1.3m deep.
Testing revealed evidence of the filling up of a portion of the site in recent times, in the form of modern fill located below the modern topsoil and above the original topsoil and natural subsoils in one of the trenches. Elsewhere the testing revealed natural undisturbed stratigraphy in the form of topsoil above natural subsoils. There was no evidence of the enclosing element of the adjacent enclosure extending into the site. None of the modern artefacts recovered were retained. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
