Archaeological monitoring of construction stage works took place at Greenore Port, Carlingford, County Louth for the development of a new quay deck and quay wall at the port. The archaeological monitoring took place intermittently over an extended period commencing in May 2019. The project was impacted by the onset of COVID 19. Also, the main contractor went into liquidation during the project, necessitating a new tendering process.
The archaeological monitoring of works resulted in the identification and preservation in situ of a single railway sleeper related to the industrial rail transport railhead that terminated at Greenore Port. The railway at Greenore Port opened in 1873 and remained in use until 1951, when the railway became too expensive to use for freight, with increased competition by road freight. This railway line is part of the Industrial Heritage of County Louth.
The inspection of dredged material from the seabed resulted in the identification of significant amounts of modern metal and plastic refuse, but no artefacts.
No archaeological features and no artefacts were identified during the archaeological monitoring.
