The author was commissioned by Focusplus on behalf of Éircom Limited to prepare a cultural heritage assessment addressing the potential impact of constructing a communications structure at an existing Éircom Exchange facility in Coolamber, County Longford. This follows a request for further information from Longford County Council in response to a planning application, including a recommendation from the National Monuments Service that an archaeological impact assessment and pre-development testing should be carried out on site.
The programme of archaeological testing was carried out on 20 August 2021 using a 12-tonne backhoe excavator with a 1.9m-wide grading bucket. In total 2 test trenches were excavated across the site, in overcast and showery conditions. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout the site with natural reddish-brown sandy silty soil with frequent inclusions of small stones underlying the topsoil and sod.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during testing.
