Planning permission was sought to carry out works consisting of renovation of the existing cottage including the construction of an extension to the rear, connect to public services and all associated site works at Lyanmore, Ardagh Village, Co. Longford.
Firstly a single 1.5m wide and 10m long archaeological test trench was opened running north-south through the centre of the proposed extension. Undisturbed subsoil consisted of a compact yellow-brown glacial till, which was overlain by 100mm of a dark yellow-brown clay loam, which was in turn overlain by some 700mm of loose dark yellow-brown humic clay loam. The only finds recovered were from this upper deposit and these consisted of fragments of late 19th- or early 20th-century domestic wares.
As nothing of archaeological interest was noted in the test trench, an open area strip took place, which consisted of the area of the development immediately to the south of the existing cottage. As with the test trench, subsoil here was a compact yellow-brown glacial till. This was overlain by a thin layer of clay loam on top of which was a substantially deeper layer of loose humic clay loam. The open area strip was extended to the south, however here the remains of a double-roomed outhouse was uncovered. This discovery confirmed the cartographic evidence which recorded this outhouse on the OS 4th edition map of the site and is contemporary with the construction in the 1870s of the estate worker's house.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered. The only feature of interest was the uncovering of the outhouse, which is shown of the OS 4th edition map and is contemporary with the 1870s estate worker's house.
