Clough/Ballacolla GAA Club undertook construction of a full-size GAA pitch, juvenile GAA pitch, new entrance, access road and car parking area at Tinnaragh, Clough, Co. Laois. Condition No. 1 of Further Information Required, Ref. 20/662 identified requirement for Geophysical Survey and Archaeological Impact Assessment, the results of which recommended requirement for archaeological test excavation, due to the presence of sub-surface anomalies and unusual alignment to a field boundary.
The test excavation, conducted on 3 July 2021, set out 15 mechanically-excavated trenches specifically sited to take into account the locations identified from geophysical survey as possibly having archaeological value, as well as to ensure sufficient coverage of the site of the proposed development.
The anomalies identified from geophysical survey were conclusively identified as either natural concentrations of naturally-occurring stone on the surface of the subsoil; stone field drains; or clay wastewater drain. No archaeology was encountered.
