Archaeological test trenching and monitoring was undertaken at specific townlands as part of the wider Great Island to Kilkenny, overhead 110kv power line upgrade. The works took place on an intermittent basis during the months of July and August 2021. Test trenching took place at Rathnasmolagh townland in advance of groundworks at IMP67 on 9 July 2021. A total of 20 linear meters of test trenches were excavated by a 7.5-tonne 360° mechanical excavator, fitted with a 1.8m wide toothless grading bucket. Monitoring of archaeological poling works at the same location took place on 10 August 2021. Monitoring of poling works at IMP4 and IMP5 in Great Island townland took place from 27 July 2021.
The archaeological works conducted did not identify any archaeological material. It should be noted that groundworks at IMP47 and IMP48 within a Zone of Notification for ringfort (KK043-010----) were not monitored due to failure of the main contractor to notify the consultant archaeologist when the works were taking place.
