Archaeological test excavations were conducted at No. 21 Maudlin Street, Kilkenny in association with an application (Planning Ref. P21/260) for the proposed development of a two-storey extension in the rear garden of the existing house.
Testing was carried out on 29 July 2021, and comprised the excavation of 2 north-south orientated trenches, measuring 1m in width, 4m in length and 1.2m in depth.
Prior to excavation the modern paving slabs covering the area were lifted. Excavated material in the trenches consisted of 0.05m of sand which had formed the base for the paving slabs. The sand overlay 0.65-0.95m of mid-brown garden soil containing frequent 20th-century refuse including glass, linoleum, ceramic, plastic and metal; this overlay natural river gravel comprising frequent water-rolled stones and boulders in a compact sandy matrix.
No features or finds of archaeological significance were discovered.
