Unlicensed archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping associated with the provision of a permitted residential development at Listerlin, Tullogher, Co. Kilkenny, was carried out on 27 May 2021, in accordance with conditions stipulated by Kilkenny County Council under planning ref. 13/222.
The proposed development site was located within the Zone of Notification/Zone of Archaeological Potential of KK036-038, a Moated Site.
Removal of topsoil from the entire footprint of the house, garage and septic tank and percolation area (to the rear (north-west) of an upstanding derelict cottage) was monitored. The site was on a gentle slope, running downhill to the west in the direction of the Arrigle River. Topsoil was mid-brown silty clay, deepest in the north-western portion of the site with a maximum depth of 0.31m. To the south and east, the topsoil was quite shallow, between 0.06m and 0.11m deep. Across the majority of the site, topsoil directly overlay natural subsoil, mid yellow/grey gravelly clay with frequent angular, siltstone.
Immediately surrounding the derelict cottage there was a deposit of rubble and refuse underlying the topsoil and lying directly on the subsoil. Material included red brick, white-glazed ceramic, metal utensils, coal and plastics. To the rear of the cottage there was a soak-hole associated with the original septic tank, comprising rounded stone, clay and frequent voids. This soak-hole was cut directly into the natural gravelly clay.
No features of archaeological significance were identified during monitoring, either associated with KK036-038, Moated Site, or other previously unknown archaeological activity.
