Test excavation was undertaken on 21-22 April 2021 in clear, sunny conditions. A total of 13 test trenches with a combined length of 1085 linear metres were excavated within the site. Topsoil varied slightly between 0.35-0.5m. Subsoil varied within the site. In the northern field, it consisted of a well-drained brownish-orange stony clay with local concentrations of sand and gravel. The southern field was less well drained and a peaty topsoil overlay a blue marl subsoil. There was a localised area of peat (c. 1.2m deep) located along the western half of Trench 11.
No features, sites or objects of archaeological significance were noted in the course of test trenching works.
