Archaeological pre-development testing, peat probing and monitoring of ground disturbance were undertaken at the site. A total of four trenches were excavated in in the course of archaeological testing in June 2021. The trenches were generally orientated NW-SE and ranged from 200m-350m in length and were 2m in width. The stratigraphy in all four was similar and consisted of peat over natural silt. Peat depth were greatest in the north and west of the site where they extended to a maximum of 1.4m. In most of the site peat depths ranged from 0m-0.5m in depth. No features of archaeological significance were encountered. The testing concluded that the peat had been harvested from the bog in most areas. Probing concentrated in areas with some peat depth and revealed no potential archaeological features.
The archaeological monitoring of peat removal commenced in the north-east of the site and continued in a westerly direction. The findings of the archaeological monitoring mirrored those of the pre-development testing with peat depths greatest in the north of the site where they extended to a maximum depth of c. 1.4m. In contrast there was little or no peat covering in the southern half of the development site. No artefacts or features of archaeological significance were encountered in the course of monitoring.
