Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in late 2021 with regard to the of construction of a new pole and mini-pillar at Ballyheige Castle, Ballyheige, Co. Kerry. The proposed new ESB pole is situated within the zone of notification of Ballyheige Castle KE009-100, a recorded protected structure classified as a Country house in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH), Reg. No. 21301401 and listed as a protected structure by Kerry County Council (Reg. No. 14-1- A & B).
Monitoring of two side-by-side minor excavations was undertaken abutting a rear crenellated parapet rubble sandstone courtyard wall within the curtilage of Ballyheigue Castle estate. Nothing of an archaeological nature was found during the monitoring.
