Archaeological testing was required on a proposed development site in the townland of Shinnagh, Rathmore, Co. Kerry. Due to the close proximity of the proposed development to an existing monument, ringfort KE060-100, Kerry County Council has asked the client to engage the services of an archaeologist to test the area prior to commencement of development in conjunction with an assessment of the site. In total 6 trenches all running north-south (T1-T5), except for one (T6) which ran north-west/south-east, were excavated. The topsoil was a light brown dry silty clay with a low density of stone inclusions and had an average depth of 0.35m. The subsoil was a light orange red compact clay with a moderate density of stone inclusions. The interface between both layers was clean however in certain spots a small degree of intermixing had occurred.
