In 2020 planning permission (Kerry County Council) was sought for the construction (a) of an easy feed livestock unit, livestock unit to include flow channel to existing slatted tank and ancillary external concrete, (b) extend existing shed, (c) construct a loose livestock house and (d) construct a new slatted tank at Ards, Fossa, Killarney, Co Kerry. Due to the proximity of known archaeological monuments (KE066-003) archaeological conditions were attached prior to approval being granted. One of the conditions was to have an “archaeological impact assessment which should include pre-development archaeological testing if necessary”.
Due to be an active farm the monitoring was divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 was just east of the ringfort where topsoil was loose light brown clay silt with a low density of stone inclusions. The subsoil was a compact dry orange/brown clay with a moderate density of stone inclusions. Phase 2 was within a shed and comprised of 2 linear trenches. The concrete was removed which exposed subsoil intermixed with hardcore along with pieces of modern debris (plastic). The subsoil was a very compact dull grey clay intermixed with hardcore. Two water pipes and one electric cable were buried within the subsoil.
No archaeology was found.
