Test excavations were undertaken in the townland of Muingwee, Knocknagashel in North Kerry in response to a planning application to construct a dwelling house.
A series of six north-north-west/south-south-east orientated linear test trenches (T1-T6) were opened across the footprint of the proposed development layout plan. Topsoil in test trenches T1-T6 was an average of 0.4m in depth and a combined length of c.350m was opened across as much of the site as was possible due to the dense scrub vegetation and other impacted areas (concrete area, shed etc.) The topsoil comprised predominantly of organic fibrous peat material intermixed with subsoil and modern rubbish. This mixed material is indicative of substantial ground disturbance in the past. This material overlay sterile subsoil comprising of mid-orange to mid-grey boulder clay. A number of modern drains, including one terracotta drain, were noted in T1 and T3. Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted in the six test trenches.
