The proposed development site at Kilbrean Beg, Kilcummin, Killarney, County Kerry, is located within a Zone of Notification of a standing stone grouping (KE059-035). The eastern and southern limits of the development site abut the townland boundary of Kilbrean More; the monument is located on the western limits of the proposed development site.
The monument was securely fenced during all on-site works to prevent accidental damage. The fence was put in place under archaeological supervision. No storage, traffic, or machinery was allowed within the fenced zone.
All demolition, ground works and ground reinstatement associated with the partial demolition of a small stable building was monitored. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during monitoring.
A section (16m north/south by 3.5-5m and 0.5-1.5m deep) of a 2007 unauthorised excavation cutting to the east of and abutting the standing stones was reinstated on the 17/07/2021. This area of the proposed development site was securely reinforced and buttressed with clay, boulders, hardcore, and topsoil as part of ground reinstatement works. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during ground reinstatement works.
The position, location and composition of the western boundary of the proposed development was agreed with the local authority in advance, minimising impact on the monument.
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during ground reinstatement works, and archaeological monitoring.
