Archaeological testing at Flesk Grove, Ballycasheen, Killarney took place in the beginning of January 2021. The proposed development site is situated within the eastern urban limits of Killarney town. Six north-west/south-east-orientated test trenches, T1-T6, were opened in northern testable part of the site using a 9-tonne machine using 1.6m-wide flat grading bucket. All the test trenches revealed that the site comprised of deep layers of disturbed ground. No original topsoil or subsoil was encountered during testing. The excavated material presented as very mixed and stony introduced material containing large quantities of all kinds of builder’s rubble/waste and was extremely difficult to excavate.
Due to the presence of the fill material, it was decided to excavate a sondage in the southern end of trench T1 to establish its precise depth. Excavation of the sondage revealed a depth of over 2m with some peaty deposits recorded at the base, at which point investigation was ceased for Health and Safety considerations before subsoil was reached. Consequently, the remainder of the test trenches was excavated to an average depth of 0.3-0.4m, as all trenches revealed disturbed ground of modern introduced fill material.
Nothing of archaeological interest was noted or recorded during testing.
