To rebuild a length of wall recently fallen in the Outer North Garden at Portumna Castle the surviving stump below ground was removed in May 2021, under archaeological supervision, in advance of setting a new foundation in the trench.
The fallen wall had been built in the later 18th century or 19th century, along the line of an earlier bank and ditch, levelled for the wall but subsequently settling and causing the wall to lean, and fall. Differences in soil colour in the likely bank material may be related to activity predating Clanricard’s 17th-century house, but the soil was too disturbed to be very informative.
