The site of the development is located on the south-east side of Old Church Street in Athenry town. The existing structure fronting onto Old Church Street is a two-storey, three-bay dwelling house that occupies a long narrow plot orientated roughly north-west/south-east. The archaeological monitoring involved the excavation of an area of 55 sq. m to a depth of 0.8-0.95m. The stratigraphy consisted of fill material throughout, and included garden soil and loose clay with stone and inclusions of 20th-century glass fragments. Natural rock was encountered at a depth of c. 0.85m below the level of the existing building in the west and extended eastwards for a distance of c. 3-4m. Rock was not encountered in the remainder of the area monitored with garden soil and fill material overlying a silty clay at a depth of c. 0.8-0.9m. Previous disturbances were apparent for excavations associated with foundations for the house, associated services and the boundary walls on either side. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered in the course of monitoring.
