Situated on the west side of Pigott’s Street in the south-east of Loughrea town. The site is located within the zone of notification of GA105:150----, Historic Town of Loughrea, and immediately south-east of Church and Graveyard GA105:150008-/150009-, NIAH Reg. No. 30337021.
The archaeological monitoring of three test trenches revealed the following: Trench A, which was located adjacent to the west boundary wall of the site, removal of a concrete layer and black/grey silty clay (depth 0.25m), revealed a deposit of black clay for a depth of 0.45m which overlay the natural orange brown gritty clay.
In Trenches B and C was found a stone fill and gravel for a depth of 0.5-1m; this overlay the orange brown gritty clay for the most part of the site. The base of a wall foundation was revealed in the north-west of the site, and corresponds with the north gable wall of the former building. A black deposit was recorded below the stone fill in Trenches B and C and excavation for a max. depth of 0.4m revealed inclusions of early 20th-century pottery and glass, with occasional oyster shells. This black layer overlay the natural orange brown gritty clay.
No features and or finds of archaeological significance were encountered in the course of the excavations.
