A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken during conservation works at Tirellan Castle, Terryland, Galway City. The conservation works included the removal of a modern steel framework within the castle, the removal of vegetation from the wall tops, and the repair and repointing of the stonework.
A significant amount of loose stone lay on the site at the commencement of the works and this material was hand-sorted under archaeological supervision. Cut stone which does not belong to the site, but which was introduced to the site in recent years, was removed to the nearby municipal waterworks.
Excavations undertaken during the works were quite limited and consisted of a single trial hole and several small pits for new lightning rods. Several fragments of glazed ceramic roof tile were retained and will be sent for specialist analysis.
