Monitoring took place of groundworks (consisting of six trial trenches) undertaken for the G-Hotel Water Mains Scheme (WMS) in March 2021. The scheme was located on the eastern outskirts of Galway city along the Old Dublin Road c. 180m to the east of the historic Bohermore Cemetery and c. 1.2km to the north-east of Galway’s historic core (GA094-100). Proposed works comprise the upgrading/replacement of 154m of water mains.
Archaeological investigations completed to date for this project include a desktop archaeological screening report to assess the scheme’s likely impact on previously recorded archaeological sites, as well as assessing the archaeological potential of the proposed scheme. The report noted that while the scheme did not directly impact any recorded archaeological sites, the route of proposed works was located within an area of archaeological potential (with a low–medium risk for the presence of buried objects/subsurface features or deposits) and recommended that all open-cut trenching was carried out under the direct supervision of an archaeologist. In line with this, archaeological monitoring of exploratory trial trenches excavated as part of works for this scheme was undertaken. No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the course of archaeological monitoring.
