2021:042 - FAIRYHILL: Portumna Blueway Project, Galway

Pre-construction archaeological test trenching was carried out in March 2021, in advance of the construction of the Portumna Blueway amenity. The archaeological works involved the mechanical excavation of four test trenches of approximately 400m in length. This work took place at two locations where the risk of impacting on archaeology was greatest. These locations were at Connacht Harbour, Gortaha townland, Portumna, and to the south of Portumna Abbey in Portumna Demesne townland. The test trenches were 1.4–1.8m wide, and were excavated to a depth of 0.7m below existing ground level. No archaeological features were identified during these works.
