Archaeological monitoring was carried out between January and March 2021, according to the contractor’s programme of groundworks. Ground reduction in the northern corner of the development area uncovered a brick-built culvert, orientated north-north-east/south-south-west.
The structure overlapped with significant retaining walls comprising part of the development and required to retain ground level differences locally of the order of 4m. Due to the restricted and embedded nature of the site, there was no option to relocate the proposed retaining walls and the brick structure needed to be removed where it overlapped with the retaining walls.
The culvert was exposed and recorded under archaeological licence (18E0680), before being partially removed. No further features, deposits or structures of archaeological significance were identified across the remainder of the development area.
