A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken during trench excavations associated with the installation of a new watermains piping at Malahide and Swords, Co. Dublin, as part of the Howth, Balbriggan and Malahide Water Supply Network Upgrades Scheme. It followed a previous desktop assessment carried out by Faith Bailey of IAC in September 2015.
The Malahide section was located between ITM 722340, 745206 and ITM 723168, 745291. The Swords section was between ITM 718128, 746622 and ITM 719327, 746315.

A significant amount of the trenching for this service infrastructure upgrade works did occur within the zone of notification for the historic town of Swords (DU011-035), as well as passing through a portion of the zone of notification for a burial ground (DU011-101).

The path of the service infrastructure upgrade works mainly followed the existing course of the old watermains and coupled with numerous other services cutting and intersecting along the route; therefore, the potential for finding undisturbed archaeology within the path of the trenches was reduced.

Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
