A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken at ‘San Guida’, New Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, during construction works for a residential development. The monitoring follows on from an archaeological desktop assessment carried out by IAC Archaeology (Waters, 2020).
Archaeological monitoring was carried intermittently and in accordance with the contractor’s programme of works between 5 and 12 October 2021. Works involved the demolition of the domestic dwelling and associated outbuildings that previously occupied the site, as well as ground-disturbing activities associated with the proposed residential development.
The ground-disturbing activities consisted of the opening of a c. 40m by 37m space where the topsoil was stripped to a depth of c. 0.4m using a mechanical excavator. The stripping of the topsoil revealed that the subsoil layers of this site had been significantly disturbed by the previous construction of a three-storey house (‘San Guida’) and associated sheds on the western side of the site. Large concrete slabs were excavated during the course of topsoil stripping, most likely related to the previous disturbance.
The stratigraphy of the site consisted of a dark brown clay containing modern rubble and building materials (0-0.3m) which came down onto a yellow brown silty clay (0.3-0.4m), which lay upon an orange, stony clay subsoil.
Aside from modern building and rubble material, all layers were sterile and contained no archaeological material or features.
