A programme of test trenching took place on 16 August 2021 at Loreto Abbey Dalkey, located in the townland of Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
A total of 3 trenches were excavated across the proposed development site measuring 183 linear metres overall. Trench No. 1 was excavated within an area of unimproved scrubland to investigate the location of a proposed athletics track. Trench Nos 2 and 3 were located on a well-maintained grassed area to investigate the location of a proposed hockey practice pitch.
The topsoil recorded across the proposed development area comprised mid-brown sandy clay, containing frequent building demolition material. The subsoil consisted of a light brown-orange sandy clay with frequent granite earth-fast boulders. Several areas of modern disturbance were recorded across the surface of the subsoil.
No features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the test trenching programme.
