Following the collapse of the roadside graveyard wall, archaeological monitoring of the repair/rebuilding works was undertaken in September 2021. The repair work to the bulging wall to the south of the entrance did not disturb any graveyard soils and therefore there was no impact on the archaeological resourse with this aspect of the works.
Stones from the collapsed wall and leaning retaining wall were removed by hand, examined and stored for future use. The digging of the new foundation trench was monitored with the evidence suggesting that the deposit of loose soil, which had accumulated at the base of the old wall, contained some disarticulated human remains, most likely deposited there as a result of disturbance to earlier graves in the past. There was no evidence within the foundation trench of any in-situ
burials or in-situ archaeological deposits.
