Monitoring of the groundworks for the Landscape and infrastructure enabling works project took place from 24 May – 23 September 2021 under an extension to the original licence. Groundworks were undertaken on an intermittent basis according to the construction schedule by a variety of tracked excavators using grading and digging buckets. Large parts of the site had been subject to earlier construction activity associated with the development of the university campus such as buildings, roads, services etc. Extensive landscaping of the site had also occurred, reflected in the presence of deep deposits of introduced soils. This was apparent from the original test excavations undertaken in November 2020 and confirmed during the course of monitoring.
No features, finds or material of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring. While groundworks are on-going, it is no longer considered necessary to continue archaeological monitoring as any risk to archaeology during these works is negligible.
