The removal of concrete surfaces at the permitted development of two new dwellings at the site revealed a flagstone surface, limestone and brick paving, a cobbled surface, and a historic concrete surface that most likely correspond to features recorded on the revised edition OS 25-inch map from 1908-1909. Objects retrieved from the rubble fill material included clay pipe stems, 20th-century glass bottles and an English half-crown coin from 1940.
Additional excavations for two surface water storage tanks to the rear of each of the houses and a manhole within the permitted laneway to the south of house 1B revealed various layers of rubble infill material. The lowest layer reached at the base of the foundation level of the development was a sandy clay at 1.45m below current street level. It had frequent small stone inclusions and may have originated from the nearby River Poddle. It contained a clay pipe bowl of early 18th-century date. No other features of archaeological potential were identified.
A raft foundation at a depth of 0.6m will be used at the development site and no further excavations will be required.
