Test excavations were undertaken between the 20 July to the 11 August 2021 in advance of development in the townlands of Ballymastone, Ballisk, Ballalease and Portraine Demesne at Donabate Co. Dublin. A total of 90 test trenches (10191 linear meters) were excavated across the site. A total of nine archaeological areas were identified within the site; three from desktop sources/previous archaeological investigations and six from the current test trenching programme.
o Archaeological Area 1; ITM 723504, 749918. Circular Enclosure (30m diameter; RMP DU012-088).
o Archaeological Area 2; ITM 723582, 750191. Pit with burnt mound material.
o Archaeological Area 3; ITM 723471, 750317. Levelled fulacht fia.
o Archaeological Area 4; ITM 723445, 750216. Pit with burnt mound material.
o Archaeological Area 5; ITM 723705, 750531. Levelled fulacht fia.
o Archaeological Area 6; ITM 723703, 750360. Possible enclosure and associated features.
o Archaeological Area 7; ITM 723652, 750325. Levelled fulacht fia.
o Archaeological Area 8; ITM 723916, 750557. Levelled fulacht fia.
o Archaeological Area 9; ITM 723695, 749978. Two circular huts, 1 Ringditch & 1 burnt spread.
Archaeological Area 1 will be preserved in situ in its entirety. Archaeological Area 9 was partially excavated under a separate licence. The remaining sites (Archaeological Areas 2 8) were fully excavated under separate licences.
