Unlicensed archaeological monitoring was carried out in compliance with Condition 8 of the grant of planning by Dublin City Council, Planning Ref. 2192/19, relating to the provision of a new classroom block within the Belvedere College S.J. campus, 6 Denmark Street Great, Dublin 1.
The Belvedere College S.J. campus is situated in the Rotunda Ward of Dublin North City, to the north-east of the central city’s historic core. The campus is sited on a corner block at the intersection of Temple Street and Denmark Street Great.
From an initial archaeological assessment it was identified that development groundworks were limited to two areas: 1. the existing Finlay Building stairwell to the east of the Findlay Building and 2. the chapel vestibule to the south side of the Finlay Building.
The room known as the chapel vestibule measured approximately 8m north-west/south-east by 5m. It had a concrete floor, which had to be removed, with the floor level being reduced by about 0.5m. Monitoring at the chapel vestibule took place on 19 May 2020, during the initial breakup of the concrete floor, and on 11 March 2021 during the excavation to ground level to facilitate a replacement floor.
No monitoring took place during excavations associated with the replacement of the Finlay Building stairwell.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during archaeological monitoring at the chapel vestibule.
