Archaeological monitoring was carried out at a school site at the Grangegorman Strategic Development Zone, Dublin between January and March 2021 under licence 18E0680. Ground reduction in the northern corner of the development area uncovered a brick-built culvert, orientated north-north-east/south-south-west.
The structure overlapped with significant retaining walls comprising part of the development and required to retain ground level differences of the order of 4m locally. Due to the restricted and embedded nature of the site, there was no option to relocate the proposed retaining walls and the brick structure needed to be removed where it overlapped with the retaining walls.
The culvert was exposed and recorded before being partially removed. No further features, deposits or structures of archaeological significance were identified across the remainder of the development area. No further archaeological mitigation is deemed necessary.
